World Health Organization
Strengthening WHO’s Capacity for Supporting and Accelerating Nutrition Action at the Country Level

Capacity-building workshop in the African Region
Nairobi, Kenya
16 to 19 April 2018

The training in the African region (AFR) was the second face-to-face training after a first phase conducted in the Eastern Mediterranean region (EMR) in October 2017. This proposed capacity-building project was discussed during the Regional Advisors’ meeting held in Geneva, Switzerland on 20 – 22 March 2017. This project was made possible through funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

The workshop in Nairobi was attended by 36 participants, including WHO staff from 17 African country offices, 4 Inter-country Support Team officers (IST), 4 regional officers, 5 staff from headquarters, 4 interpreters and 2 staff from the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR). Participants covered several technical areas, including maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health; family and reproductive health; nutrition; health promotion; NCDs; and evidence and programme guidance.
The objectives of the workshop included the orientation of AFR staff on the WHO guidance and tools available to support nutrition action, and on nurturing care for early childhood development through nutrition services enhanced with interventions for responsive caregiving and early learning. Another objective was to brainstorm on the actions required and how to engage different stakeholders to address the double burden of malnutrition in the African Region. AFR staff were also brought together to discuss the role of WHO frontline staff in the delivery of nutrition action at country level. In addition, participants received hands-on training on resource mobilization. Finally, the workshop aimed to help AFR staff develop SMART targets for the outcomes of the workshop and how they will be assessed as a practical exercise in monitoring and evaluation (M&E).
